of the phone, called the True Depth Camera system.
It scans the shape of your face with infrared light,
a beam of 30,000 dots that are invisible to the human eye.
As the phone creates a depth map of your face,
the data is turned into a mathematical representation.
It's encrypted and lives locked in your device, never backed up
to the iCloud or anywhere else. The system is focused mostly on the details around your eyes, nose and mouth.

The A12 bionic chip is packed with transistors. Its key features include

A six-core CPU (that has a fusion architecture with two high performance cores – that run up to 15% faster than the cores in the A11 bionic chip, while also being 40% more energy efficient and four efficiency cores – that are up to 50% more energy efficient. All the six-cores can run at once when a power boost is needed).
